How to manage depression

If you or someone you know is experiencing depression, be sure to reach out to a healthcare professional.

You can also try opening up to a trusted co-worker, friend or family member about your feelings. If you notice the signs of depression in someone else, ask them how they are feeling.

Practice self-care techniques like mindfulness or meditation to refresh your mind.

Exercise releases feel-good hormones such as endorphins, so practise an activity you enjoy, whether that’s going for a walk or playing a team sport.

Eat healthy, nutritious foods and avoid alcohol and illicit drugs, as they may act as a depressant, making you feel worse.

Create a wind-down routine to help you sleep. This may involve staying off electronic devices an hour before bedtime, taking a hot shower and listening to some relaxing music.

If you are worried about someone’s mental or physical health, follow the DRSABCD St John Action Plan for guidance on how to help them.

If the situation is life-threatening, call Triple Zero (000) for an ambulance.
