Signs and symptoms of fractures
Fractures have a range of symptoms, which can vary according to the seriousness of the break. Typical signs include pain, swelling, tenderness or bruising around the site of the fracture. The immediate area may appear discoloured, deformed, or different from normal.
You may also be unable to move or put weight on the affected area or feel a grating sensation. The wound around the fracture may be bleeding, and in the case of open fractures, you may be able to see the bone.
Other physical symptoms include:
- Tingling or numbness
- Moderate to intense pain
- Faintness, dizziness or nausea if the fracture is severe
- A feeling of warmth in the affected area
