B – Breathing (infants)

Check for breathing. You can do this by looking, listening and feeling.

  • Look for movement of the lower chest.
  • Listen for the escape of air from the nose and mouth.
  • Feel for the movement of air around the mouth and nose.

They are not breathing normally if there are less than 2 breaths in 10 seconds.

Breathing normally:

Place them face down on your forearm in the recovery position. Monitor breathing and responsiveness until the ambulance arrives.

Not breathing normally:

Leave or place them on their back. Gently adjust the head to a neutral position and start Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
