Topic 2

Signs and symptoms of overdose and intoxication

It’s best practice not to exceed one standard drink per hour in order to maintain a blood alcohol level range between 0.05% to 0.08%. Once you exceed this limit you are considered intoxicated. However, this will vary from person to person depending on their size and weight.

Every time you take illegal drugs or a substance that is not prescribed to you, you are putting yourself at risk. Whether it’s your first time, you’ve done it before, or your friends tell you it’s okay – you can never be certain of what the drug contains or the effect it will have on you.

If a person shows signs of intoxication or a potential drug overdose, they may be in trouble and require medical attention as soon as possible.

If you notice the following symptoms, it’s time to visit the medical tent or call Triple Zero (000):

  • Feeling fatigued or becoming unconscious
  • Feeling faint, nauseous and/or vomiting
  • Impaired judgement
  • Slurred speech
  • Impaired balance and coordination
  • Unstable emotions such as irritability or being irrational
  • Headache and muscle cramps
