What is a snake bite?

When snakes attack, they use their fangs to inject venom, which can spread throughout the body. While the injury site itself is relatively small, the effects are potentially lethal. And, although not all snakes are venomous, it’s best to treat all snakebites as life-threatening.

Hikers are encouraged to wear appropriate clothing and prepare for potential bites. Since bites often occur on the ankles, it’s advisable to wear pants rather than shorts. Hiking boots or other protective footwear are also recommended. 

High-risk areas for snakes:

  • Heavy forest areas
  • Outback locations
  • Tall grass or wetland areas
  • Ocean
