Topic 1
What is sunburn?
In short, a sunburn is inflamed, sensitive skin that feels warm to the touch. It may appear darker than normal or reddish in colour. Sunburn is caused by dry heat to the skin from prolonged sun exposure, which is common on the beach. In fact, severe sunburn more than doubled among Western Australians aged 10–19 in 2020, according to Cancer Council WA.
Wearing sunscreen could protect you and your children from sunburn when used properly. However, swimming and drying could inadvertently remove the lotion. Most sunscreens should be reapplied every 80 minutes for continued protection. Making sure to cover up your skin as much as possible, wearing a hat and sunglasses will also add extra protection against sunburn.
Possible causes of sunburn include:
- Intensity of the sun’s UV rays
- The amount of time you spend in the sun, especially on sunny days
- Spending time outdoors, such as at the beach or in the water
