Signs and symptoms of sunburn

There are two common types of sunburn, namely, first-degree and second-degree burns. First-degree or superficial burns damage the outer layer of the skin and heal on their own within a few days. They are the most common type.

Second-degree or deep sunburns damage the inner layer of your skin called the dermis. Blistering may occur in some cases. This type heals in a few weeks and may require medical treatment.

Other physical symptoms of a deep burn include:

  • Very red or charred skin
  • White discolouration
  • Excessive blistering and swelling
  • Pain
  • White discolouration
  • No pain in case of damaged nerve endings

The last type of sunburn is far less common but considerably more dangerous. Third-degree sunburn damages every layer of skin, including the fatty lower layer. This type could destroy nerve endings and requires emergency treatment.
