How to administer first aid for sunburn

Treat first-degree sunburn using the following steps:

  1. Follow the DRSABCD St John Action Plan.
  2. Cool the burn — apply cool water or a compress to the burn for about 10 minutes.
  3. Apply petroleum jelly since other ointments could cause infection.
  4. Bandage the burn and keep covered.
  5. Administer pain medicine. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen helps mitigate pain or inflammation.
  6. In most cases, there is no need to see a doctor.

  3. Apply a compress if running water is not available.
  4. Avoid applying ice since it could cause further damage.
  5. Avoid popping blisters or applying ointments, which could cause infection.
  6. Cover the burn loosely with a sterile bandage and secure it with gauze or medical tape.
  7. Lay the person down, elevate feet about 30cm, elevate the burn above the heart and cover them with a blanket.
  8. When in doubt or in case of a severe burn, call Triple Zero (000) for immediate medical assistance.
