How to administer first aid for sunburn
Treat first-degree sunburn using the following steps:
- Follow the DRSABCD St John Action Plan.
- Cool the burn — apply cool water or a compress to the burn for about 10 minutes.
- Apply petroleum jelly since other ointments could cause infection.
- Bandage the burn and keep covered.
- Administer pain medicine. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen helps mitigate pain or inflammation.
- In most cases, there is no need to see a doctor.
Treat second-degree sunburn using the following steps:
- Follow the DRSABCD St John Action Plan.
- Immerse the sunburn in cool water for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Apply a compress if running water is not available.
- Avoid applying ice since it could cause further damage.
- Avoid popping blisters or applying ointments, which could cause infection.
- Cover the burn loosely with a sterile bandage and secure it with gauze or medical tape.
- Lay the person down, elevate feet about 30cm, elevate the burn above the heart and cover them with a blanket.
- When in doubt or in case of a severe burn, call Triple Zero (000) for immediate medical assistance.
