Topic 1

What is severe bleeding?

Severe bleeding refers to an excessive amount of blood loss. It’s distinguished by visible blood loss such as oozing, flowing or spurting. The injured person might also experience pain, tenderness or dizziness, as well as thirst or waning consciousness. He or she may also be pale and/or at risk of fainting.

In a kitchen, severe bleeding is often caused by knife injuries in food preparation. Kitchen knives, utensils, slicers and mandolins could cause cuts and bleeding. Other risk factors such as close working proximity, slipping and falling, and broken glass could be at fault.

Possible causes for severe bleeding include:

  • Cuts and bleeding from dull knives or kitchen equipment
  • Cuts from slippery cutting boards and/or food surfaces
  • Accidental misuse of kitchen equipment
