Topic 2

Signs and symptoms of a burn

There are two common types of burns, namely, first-degree and second-degree burns. First-degree or superficial burns damage the outer layer of the skin and cause pain, redness and swelling. These burns usually heal within several days.

Second-degree or deep burns damage the first two layers of your skin. Beyond the pain, redness and swelling, second-degree burns sometimes blister. This type of burn heals in a few weeks and may require medical treatment.

However, there is a more serious third-degree burn which causes damage to the skin and fatty tissue below it. The skin may appear blackened, whitened, burned or charred. Unfortunately, such burns may cause numbness and require emergency medical care.

Other physical symptoms of a deep burn include:

  • Very red or charred skin
  • White discolouration
  • Excessive blistering and swelling
  • Pain
  • No pain in case of damaged nerve endings
