Topic 3
How to administer first aid for a burn
Treat second-degree burns using the following steps:
- Follow the DRSABCD St John Action Plan.
- If clothing is on fire, have the injured person stop, drop and roll.
- Stop them from moving around.
- Assess their breathing.
- Immerse the burn in cool running water for 20 minutes.
- Do not apply ice since it could cause further damage.
- Do not remove clothing that is stuck to the skin.
- Do not puncture blisters or apply ointments, which could cause infection.
- Cover the burnt area with a light, non-stick dressing, or clean, dry, non-fluffy material loosely and secure it with gauze or medical tape.
- Lay the person down, elevate their feet about 30 cm, elevate the burn above the heart and cover him/her with a blanket.
- When in doubt, call Triple Zero (000) for immediate medical assistance. Burns may be lethal.
