Topic 2

Signs and symptoms of bleeding

The physical signs of external bleeding are usually quite obvious. After a quick inspection, you will notice blood flowing or oozing from the affected area. In many cases, the surrounding tissue will also be bruised, tender, or painful to touch. Bleeding describes the loss of blood, and its identification is always enough to cause concern.

Injuries to external parts of the body can also result in internal bleeding, which is much harder to diagnose. Visible signs of internal bleeding include bruising, blood leaking from orifices, and blood being coughed up.

Other physical symptoms of bleeding include:

  • Blood spurting, flowing, or oozing
  • Swollen or bruised injury site
  • Bleeding from the nose or ears
  • Frothy and bloody spit being coughed up
