Choking – signs and symptoms

Choking can often be silent, making it harder to notice.

If your baby is choking, their frantic actions and struggle to breathe may not last long. This could indicate a life-threatening situation rather than the blockage having cleared.

Here are some signs to look for:

  • Panicked or frantic behaviour
  • Cold or clammy skin
  • Coughing, wheezing or whistling
  • Blue lips, face, earlobes and fingernails
  • No response or loss of consciousness
