Topic 2
Burns – signs and symptoms
We will focus on minor burns, but it’s important to know what a severe burn is so you can seek emergency help.
All burns require immediate first aid. Seek medical advice if an infant has a burn.
A severe burn is an emergency.
For minor (superficial) burns, look for:
- Red skin and swelling
- Crying or pain in the area of the burn
- Blistering (may not be immediate)
For severe (deep or full-thickness) burns, look for:
- Skin that is white, dark red or charred
- There might not be pain – nerve endings could have been damaged
- White tissue might be exposed
- Minor burns in the surrounding areas
