Topic 2

Burns – signs and symptoms

We will focus on minor burns, but it’s important to know what a severe burn is so you can seek emergency help.

All burns require immediate first aid. Seek medical advice if an infant has a burn.

A severe burn is an emergency.

For minor (superficial) burns, look for:

  • Red skin and swelling
  • Crying or pain in the area of the burn
  • Blistering (may not be immediate)

For severe (deep or full-thickness) burns, look for:

  • Skin that is white, dark red or charred
  • There might not be pain – nerve endings could have been damaged
  • White tissue might be exposed
  • Minor burns in the surrounding areas
