Topic 3
How to administer first aid for dehydration
If you suspect someone is dehydrated at a festival or event, here’s what to do:
- Take them to a cool environment or shaded area and help them sit down in a comfortable position
- Assist them with drinking water at a slow and steady pace. Make sure you don’t guzzle the water as this could cause issues
- If they complain of muscle cramps, help them stretch and massage the affected muscles
- Keep them calm and awake so you can monitor their symptoms for improvement.
Remember, rehydration doesn’t happen quickly. If symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical assistance immediately by taking them to the nearest medical tent.
If there isn’t a medical station at the event, call Triple Zero (000) and follow the DRSABCD Action Plan until help arrives.
