Signs and symptoms of burnout

Stress is the precursor to burnout if left unattended. In other words, chronic stress that is not handled properly could eventually lead to a system breakdown. Sustaining high levels of stress without healthy coping mechanisms or creative outlets does eventually take its toll. Burnout is the result of chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.

Burnout is a problem for employees and employers alike. Employees affected by burnout may be less effective than they once were, which translates to poor performance. They may also feel like they’re running on empty and are less motivated about their work or workplace. Since burnout doesn’t happen overnight, curbing the effects of stress early on may help prevent it.

Other physical symptoms of burnout include:

  • Exhaustion
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Lack of motivation
  • Depression
  • Short temper
  • Physical symptoms of stress
  • Negative outlook
