How to administer first aid for stress at work

Stress in the workplace is different from most emergency situations. For that reason, here are a few general suggestions for effective stress relief:

  • Practise time management. Create a schedule for yourself to stay on track and in control.
  • Set your priorities. Some employees try to do everything instead of deciding what matters the most. Write down your main priorities for the day or job and consider the others later.
  • Express yourself. It’s normal to feel stressed out at work sometimes, and talking about it can help. Tell your friends, family or mental health practitioner how you feel and ask for their suggestions.
  • Step back. Sometimes all you need is a change! Whether it’s five minutes away from your desk or time to return a call, a break might do the trick.
  • Invest in yourself. Whether you’re interested in physical fitness, meditation or positive thinking, self-care helps mitigate stress.
  • Communicate effectively. If you’re experiencing stress on the job, consider consulting your boss or HR department. They may be able to help you manage your workload or provide suggestions you hadn’t considered.

In case of an emergency situation, please follow the DRSABCD St John Action Plan.
