Signs and symptoms of severe bleeding

While bleeding is common for cuts and abrasions, severe bleeding is cause for concern. Here are a few common symptoms of severe bleeding:

  • A visible loss of blood, such as oozing, flowing or spurting
  • Pain
  • Tenderness
  • Pale complexion
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Thirst
  • Increased loss of consciousness

Severe bleeding varies from other forms of bleeding in a number of ways. Not only is there more blood loss, but there may also be related symptoms such as dizziness, paleness or a quick or progressive decrease in consciousness. Even small injuries could lead to severe bleeding in need of immediate medical attention.

Other physical symptoms of severe bleeding include:

  • Fast heart rate
  • Clammy skin
  • Low blood pressure
  • Intensity of blood loss, such as fast blood accumulation
