If the injured person is unconscious, seek immediate medical assistance. Control the bleeding as indicated below and call Triple Zero (000) for an ambulance.

If the injured person is conscious, do the following:

1. Start with the DRSABCD St John Action Plan.
2. Reassure the person, lay them down and remove or cut clothing for wound exposure.
3. Apply direct pressure to or around the wound using your hands, a pad or a beach towel.
4. Squeeze the wound together to prevent further bleeding.
5. Raise the injured part of the body above the person’s heart. Be mindful of other injuries.
6. Cover the wound with a pad and secure it with a bandage.
7. If the original bandage shows signs of bleeding, do not remove it; instead, add another layer.
8. Monitor the bleeding and ensure circulation below the wound. Check the bandages every 15 minutes to ensure they’re not too tight.
9. When in doubt, call Triple Zero (000) for immediate medical assistance. Severe bleeding may be lethal.
10. Do not give the injured person food or water.
