Topic 2
Signs and symptoms of cuts and scrapes
Cuts and scrapes usually have obvious signs and symptoms. These include torn skin, marks on the skin, redness around the affected area, pain in the area of the cut or scrape, and bleeding.
You may also notice a foreign body (something that’s not supposed to be there) in the area of the cut or scrape. If you’re fishing, this could be a fishhook, spear, or other sharp object you may encounter.
Other physical symptoms of cuts and scrapes include:
- Severe bleeding if an artery has been affected
- Moderate to severe pain, especially in the case of a foreign body
- Haemorrhagic shock following heavy blood loss, which includes shallow breathing, rapid heart rate, blue fingernails and lips, sweating, chest pain and losing consciousness
