Topic 2

Why is first aid important?

Many of us enjoy boating as a way to unwind and get out in the fresh air. However, even if practised safely, this pastime can present risks, including injury or even death. Slips, trips, and cuts can happen on a boat, particularly if you are handling fishing equipment, and the risk of drowning should be ever-present in your mind.

Even if you’re a seasoned boater or a strong swimmer, one thing you can’t control is the climate and the unpredictability of the outdoors. Weather can change rapidly on the water, putting you at risk of injury or accident. Knowing how to help in a boating incident could save someone’s life.

First aid is essential because:

  • An estimated 18% of Australians go boating every year, making it a popular hobby.
  • Boating is the activity with the second-highest number of deaths in Australia.
  • On average, around 23 people drown every year while boating on Australian waters.
