Topic 1

What are bites and stings?

Bites and stings are injuries caused by insects such as mosquitoes, spiders, bees, wasps, ants, or other insects or animals. In the case of spiders and snakes, a bite may be venomous.

You will usually know straight away if you have been bitten or stung by an animal or insect, as you will experience immediate pain or discomfort. Sometimes, bites and stings are not apparent until later when you notice puncture marks, swelling, redness, or itching at the site of the bite or sting.

Bites and stings are common injuries when you’re camping or enjoying the great outdoors.

Possible causes for bites and stings include:

  • Leaving the skin exposed in habitats known for their insect population
  • Disturbing wildlife, such as snakes
  • Walking barefoot and treading on an insect or other stinging or biting animal
