Topic 2
Why is first aid important?

Camping with friends and family is always fun but can be quite a risky activity. Bites, stings, strains, and sprains can occur at any time while outdoors, especially when exploring rural areas.
If you’re in a remote place without a mobile signal and far from help, it’s extra important to know some essential first aid skills. The first moments of dealing with an emergency are vital, especially when there may be a long journey to the hospital. Your knowledge could help someone in need — or even save a life.
First aid is essential because:
- According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 3,520 Australians had to go to the hospital because of contact with venomous plants or animals in 2017-2018.
- 26% of these hospitalisations were caused by bee stings, 19% by spider bites, and 17% by venomous snakes.
- Every year, around 230,000 Australians seek medical treatment for ankle sprains, making them a common injury.
