Topic 2
Why is first aid important?

From crawling into mischief to climbing trees, infants and children are natural explorers. But with adventure comes risk.
Knowing first aid means you can help them feel better, heal quicker or care for them until an ambulance arrives. It could even save their life!
First aid is essential because:
- 66,500 children are hospitalised every year due to injuries
- 8 in every 100,000 children experience cardiac arrest each year
- 94% of cardiac arrests occur at home or in a public space – not the hospital
- Road accidents are the leading cause of death for children in Australia
