Topic 3
First Aid for an allergic reaction
Help the child to lay flat on the ground. If they are having trouble breathing, you should help them to sit upright instead. Do not let the child stand or walk around.
If the person is having trouble breathing, staying awake or loses consciousness at any point, call Triple Zero (000) and complete the DRSABCD Action Plan.
If the child has an EpiPen® in their school bag or if there is one with the school nurse, use it immediately.
Ask the child if they need your help to do this or if they are okay to use it themselves. Wait for five minutes to see if the child starts to feel better.
If they still feel unwell and appear to still have symptoms of an allergic reaction, give them another dose using an EpiPen®.
Also, make sure to follow your school’s policy for contacting parents in the event of a medical emergency.
Step 1
Form a firm fist around the EpiPen® and pull off the BLUE SAFETY RELEASE.

Step 2
Place ORANGE END against the outer-mid thigh. It can be injected through clothing.

Step 3
Push down hard until a click is heard or felt and hold for 3 seconds. Then remove the EpiPen® and dispose of it safely – being careful of the needle.
