Why is first aid important?

There are many reasons why learning first aid is essential for mountain bikers. One of the main attractions of this sport is that it often takes place in beautiful locations, far from towns and cities. This means that if someone you are with gets hurt, it could take time for help to arrive, so being able to offer initial care is essential.
Mountain biking can also involve taking risks, whether that is exploring uneven terrain or riding fast, so minor (and sometimes more serious) injuries can happen.
First aid is essential because:
- Nearly 342,000 Australians participate in mountain biking, making it a popular activity.
- A recent study found that fractures represented up to 43% of mountain biking injuries.
- Other common injuries include cuts, scrapes and bruises.
