Topic 2
First aid for internal and external bleeding
External bleeding
To control external bleeding and minimise blood loss, you should:
- Apply direct pressure: use a clean cloth or bandage to apply direct pressure on the wound. This helps to slow the bleeding.
- Elevate the wound: if possible, raise the injured area above the level of the heart to reduce blood flow to the wound.
- Apply dressings: once bleeding is under control, apply sterile dressings and secure them with bandages to protect the wound.
Internal bleeding
When you suspect internal bleeding in a person, you should:
- Keep them warm and as still as possible to minimise further injury.
- Call for an ambulance immediately, as internal bleeding can be life-threatening.
