What is the difference between internal and external bleeding?

Understanding how to deal with bleeding, whether it’s internal or external, is extremely important. As a new driver, you may find yourself in situations where a quick and effective response to bleeding can make all the difference.

External Bleeding

External bleeding occurs when blood escapes from a wound on the body’s surface. It’s a common result of accidents and injuries you might encounter while driving.

External bleeding is often visible, with blood flowing from the wound. It can result from cuts, scrapes, or deeper injuries like those caused by accidents on the road.

Signs and symptoms of internal bleeding

While you might not see it, internal bleeding can be equally serious and requires prompt attention. It often occurs as a result of blunt force trauma.

Signs and symptoms include:

  • Pain and tenderness in the injured area
  • Abdominal rigidity or swelling in the abdomen
  • Coughing up red, frothy bubbles
