Causes, Signs, and Symptoms of Shock

What can cause shock?

Shock happens when not enough oxygen is getting to your vital organs and tissues. Things that can cause this include:

  • Heart attack
  • Bleeding
  • Vomiting and diarrhoea
  • Burns
  • Pain or trauma
  • Major or multiple fractures
  • Infections
  • Allergic reactions
  • Severe sweating and dehydration

What are the symptoms of shock?

Depending on the cause, signs and symptoms of shock may include:

  • Rapid, weak pulse
  • Feeling cold, shivering
  • Dizziness, light-headedness
  • Pale, cold, clammy skin
  • Shallow, rapid, difficulty breathing
  • Anxiety
  • Thirst, a dry mouth
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Confusion and disorientation
  • Unconsciousness
