Topic 2

Why is it important?

Food allergy and asthma have a significant presence among children in Australia and New Zealand.

Allergic reactions are common in children and can range from mild to severe. Understanding what to do in these situations is critical to ensuring children have the best chance of recovery safely.

First Aid is essential because:

  • Up to 1 in 20 school-aged children have food allergies
  • Approximately one in every 100 school-age children has anaphylaxis
  • The most common triggers of allergic reactions in childhood are from common foods such as eggs, peanuts, tree nuts and cow’s milk.
