Signs and symptoms of shock

When the body faces distress due to insufficient blood flow or oxygen, it often manifests through various signs and symptoms. Understanding these crucial indicators can be the key to prompt intervention and potentially life-saving actions.

Signs and symptoms of shock may include:

  • Rapid heart rate — The heart beats faster to try to compensate for decreased blood flow.
  • Low blood pressure — This happens as the body struggles to maintain blood pressure due to decreased blood volume or impaired pumping of the heart.
  • Rapid, shallow breathing — The body tries to increase oxygen intake.

Other physical symptoms could include:

  • Cool, clammy skin
  • Confusion or altered mental state
  • Weakness, dizziness, or fainting
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Pale or bluish lips and fingernails
