Topic 2

Signs and symptoms of severe injury after falling

Not all falls are cause for concern, though some are serious indeed. For example, a dislocated joint may lead to a loss of motion, tenderness, abnormal movement or discolouration. In case of a broken bone, the injured person might experience swelling, bruising or bleeding, numbness/tingling or intense pain.

Head injuries sometimes result from workplace falls. In this case, the injured person could feel dizzy or nauseous, confused or irritable. They might also experience blurred vision, bleeding or other wounds to the head. As with all injuries, pay attention to abnormal behaviour and seek medical assistance when needed.

Other physical symptoms of severe injury include:

  • Bleeding
  • Confusion
  • Limited consciousness
  • Loss of motion
  • Changes in behaviour
  • Pain/tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Wounding
  • Discolouration
